There is a small update on the condition of Thrashers goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. He remains in an undisclosed Atlanta hospital for further tests after losing consciousness and collapsing on the ice in Friday’s season opener.
Coach Craig Ramsay said Saturday that Pavelec has a concussion. It is likely that the concussion was the result of his fall, but nothing is certain at this point. Doctors are most likely still trying to find the cause of the collapse.
Pavelec was alert and responsive after arriving at the hospital. He told me that he is feeling better in a text message early Saturday morning. I have plans to speak to Pavelec later this afternoon and will update.
“He’s awake and alert but they have to do more tests,” Ramsay said. “We have very little knowledge other than he seems to be doing much, much better.”
To replace Pavelec, the Thrashers are flying Drew MacIntyre to Tampa for tonight’s game. He had not arrived in time for the team’s morning practice but was expected in the early afternoon. MacIntrye had 25 saves for AHL Chicago in their season opener, a 6-3 loss to San Antonio, Friday.
Just took a read through the comments from the first blog on Pavelec. Lots of support from around the league, including messages posted by fans of the Capitals, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Lightning, Wild, Rangers, Sharks, Canadiens, Islanders, Stars, Hurricanes, Flames and Bruins. Very nice.
